Announcement: TOSRPTMS - The Official Semi-Regular Poker Tournament of Mississippi
Spread the word. Please point other potential players to this post.

What: TOSRPTMS - The Official Semi-Regular Poker Tournament of Mississippi

More What: A No-Limit Hold 'Em, small stakes, friendly yet competitive poker game amongst friends pulling competitors from all over Mississippi.

When: Saturday, July 17th, 2004 (approximately one week)

Where: everraven's house in J-town. Please leave a comment and I'll email you directions.

Schedule: Doors open at 10:30 AM for check-in and buy-in. We'll take the first twenty players to show up or reserve a seat. Be at your table assignment at 11:50 AM. Game play starts at noon. No late buy-ins. We play to one man's left standing...er...sitting.

Cost: $25+. Broken down that's $20 Buy-in, $5 mandatory fee for the house costs of sodas and snacks (these get very expensive). Alcohol is welcome but byob as are any special, non-standard snacks that only you would eat. We'll be taking a short dinner break around 6-7PM, so either bring money for your dinner or pack a brown bag.

Extras: If you have a few spare folding chairs, please bring them. Table-space and chips are thoughtfully contributed by Rogers and the everraven household (and me, if we need mine, too), but we're still a little short on seating.

Rules: There will be a quickie how-to session before we start the game. Don't be afraid to ask questions. I'll have a copy of the rules for everyone to look over, sign, and carry to the tables with them.

The minimum opening bet is equal to the size of the big blind. The minimum raise is equal to the last bet/raise for that round of betting. This is a no-limit tournament, which means there is no maximum bet. Be ready for aggressive play, bluffing, and re-raises.

Although this game is competitive, remember to keep your temper in check. The buy-ins are low so we're here to have fun; winning some extra cash is only a bonus. Smack-talk and teasing is common in competitive games and expected amongst this group of friends. Gentle ribbing and heckling is acceptable and usually in good fun. That said, don't be a total flaming jackass to other players.

We'll probably be using the seventh progression (prog7, the green one) for the game.

*smacks forhead*

First: Ante - are we gonna chunk it or keep it?
I'm up for chunking it - it really doesn't speed things up, thats what the blinds do.

Second: Breaks - I'd really like to limit the breaks to a bare minimum 30 minute food break around 6/7. Mostly, this is how its done in the casino. If you need a bathroom break, your just gonna get skipped in the hand. I know you need a cig, a coke or a breath of fresh air - but... I really don't want to see one table taking constant breaks while the other tables play on. Ideas? Comments?

Re: *smacks forhead*

I figured we'd do like last time, give people five minutes per hour between each blind change. So really, the blinds would apply for 55 minutes each.

And the breaks would be taken at the same time for all tables so no one table plays significantly more hands than the rest.

And chunk the antes. We don't need 'em.

Re: *smacks forhead*

Hell yeah - sounds like a plan!

As well, the pizza man does know where I live - if anyone wants to just order.

Just writing to say it will be good to see you guys there, can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to it!

I'm in.

I've been interested in this since I first started hearing about it.

It'll be fun, I'm sure. I'm decent at the whole poker thing...

I'll do some research into the whole Hold 'Em Poker rules so that I may ask intelligent questions. :)

Discordian here: As I recall last time, some people thought that the hourly progression was a little slow and wanted to change it to 45 mins or something similar. It's all good to me though. I'm looking forward to having a good time. I'll be there.

Alternately, do something like the online casinos do: Blinds progress per 10 hands. So you have 10 hands at 1/2, then 10 more at 2/4... etc. At least, that's how it goes in the single table tourney's online. You might want to bump the numbers so it's 15, 20, 23, 42, or even 1,294.3 hands (which would be a bitch to keep track of)....

everraven From: everraven Date: July 9th, 2004 11:23 am (UTC) (link)
Our problem with that is we have different tables - and some tables may go through hands faster. That means that every table wouldn't be on the same blind progression at some point.

How do they do it at the real deal?
yermie From: yermie Date: July 9th, 2004 12:02 pm (UTC) (link)

the "real deal"

Don't know... Once I win the satellite, I'll let you know...

Of course, that requires me to win the satellite....

I've only played in non-tournaments, and single table tournaments (so far). I'm working up my skills (and account balance) before trying the big games.

The casino tournament that I played in last week upped the blinds every 20 minutes. I had the impression that was pretty standard casino-wise.
lost_angel From: lost_angel Date: July 9th, 2004 03:53 pm (UTC) (link)
The $200 buy-in tournament I played in Tunica several months back upped the blinds every hour. We got a ten minute break every two hours or so.

The blinds might progress more quickly for smaller satellites like the ones that navydave has played in, they probably progress much more quickly.

I made up progression seven and though we might use it this time. It's a little steeper at the beginning so hopefully will help prevent the game from going ten hours or more. Also, with the set rules of bets being minimum of the big blind and re-raises at least the size of the raise before, we can make sure that no one slips back to just raising one or two for certain hands.

I'd love to come

I'd love to come.

However, being 1000 miles away tends to put a damper on these types of activities. So instead, I'll play some online, and imagine it's you guys I'm beating...

Hope it's a blast.

An addition to the above information...

We have room/chips for 20 players. What this means is that people are going to have to reserve seats. Sorry, but thems the breaks.

List of people who I know are coming:

Ellis (me), Shana, Shawn R., Shawn L., Grayson, Andy, Ryan, Roman, Ben, Ginger, Jimmy, Jennifer, Kirk.

Other than that, I dunno. Anyone else who believes that I know you are going to be here, PLEASE do not assume that! I don't know everyone who will be here, and my amazing psychic powers are on the fritz! :)

So, here's how we do this. I have 7 spots left open, by my count. Ginger, I think you said that you had around five folks with y'all? If so, that is two more slots, so drop the empty seats to five. Ginger-Mah-Buddy, please drop me an e-mail (mandis13@bellsouth.net) with everyone you KNOW is gonna be there with your crew. I'll add them to my list. Other than that, if you are not already listed, please drop me an e-mail with who you are (aka name) and your interest to play.

Last thing... if you ARE on this list, or ask for a reserved seat, PLEASE don't drop some lame excuse as to why you can't make it at the last minute. We really, really want a good turnout, and if half the people flake out on us (its happened before), its a downer.

Much love, peeps! See y'all soon!

Re: An addition to the above information...

An updated list of who has reserved:

Ellis (me), Shana, Shawn R., Shawn L., Grayson, Andy, Ryan, Roman, Ben, Ginger, Jimmy, Jennifer, Kirk, Jake, Tony.

Maybes (Ginger is checking on these):

Paul, Brooke, Matthew, and Kurt S.

That is nineteen so far, if everyone winds up in. We have room for 20, as previously stated. So we should have room for uno more.

I'm drilling in Meridian during the day on the 17th, so there's no way I can make the buy in. Alas. May stop in later that night to say hello and hang out though.
From: (Anonymous) Date: July 12th, 2004 05:26 am (UTC) (link)
Discordanian/Kurt S. will be there. Go ahead and reserve a slot for me. Thanks!
From: mglover Date: July 12th, 2004 07:31 am (UTC) (link)
I don't know for certain that I'll be able to make it, so don't put me on the list. When I do know, I'll let you know.
