The Press of Politics

I spent today brushing up on some subtle-as-a-sledgehammer political satire and straight-up political criticism.

Thanks to birdofparadox, I started off with some sardonic war posters, some of which were funny, some of which were on a South Park level of wrong. All anti-Bush, all liberal.

To assure some balance in my daily political diet, I read a few Ann Coulter articles. She's diametrically opposed to all things liberal or Democrat.

In the limited reading I've done, many syndicated columnists are so highly critical of another movement that they only write...well...criticism and rarely propose anything useful or productive, no suggested remedy. And often each side uses similar tactics that it ridicules in the other. All-in-all, the situation boils down to a political crusade in which both sides look like children and few helpful policies are suggested.

Now I remember why I fell out of love with politics and how naive I used to be (and still can be).

At least I learned a new word today: shibboleth

1. A word or pronunciation that distinguishes people of one group or class from those of another.
2. a. A word or phrase identified with a particular group or cause; a catchword.
b. A commonplace saying or idea.
3. A custom or practice that betrays one as an outsider.
